The other day, I found myself unexpectedly stirred up while talking to a family member about a political figure. I imagine I’m not the only one who’s had a conversation like this. As I reflected afterward, I realized how fascinating it was that our exchange felt both confrontational and healing. Confrontational because we held different views, and healing because, after a lifetime of holding back, there was something empowering in finally speaking up. Though our views didn’t align, the act of voicing my truth felt like a gesture of honoring my own being. A few moments later, we reminded each other of our love—and ultimately, that love remains the most important thing.
In these times of division, some questions feel particularly valuable to ask myself:
• Can I look for the common ground between us?
• How will I love myself and others today?
• What would love do in this situation?
I’m grateful that each day offers opportunities to turn toward these questions.
Speaking of love, at the end of October, I had the honor of giving a few talks at the “Power of Love” retreat led by Tibetan Buddhist nun and spiritual friend Ani Lodro: https://www.anilodroretreats.com/. One of the talks was titled “The Role of Self-Love in the Awakening Process.” While it was designed with meditators and fellow sangha members in mind, the practices shared may resonate with anyone on the path toward self-love and awakening. This 36-minute talk also includes 3 stand-alone Guided Meditations. May they bring light to your journey.
